Anna Kournikova, the Russian tennis sensation and the heart-throb of millions around the world was born on June 7, 1981 in Moscow.
She took the tennis racket in her hand at the age of five years and soon made her debut as a professional at the age of fourteen. In 1995 Anna became the No.1 junior player of the world and in the very next year competed in the U.S. Open before bowing out to Steffi Graff in the fourth round.
Her career high came in the year 1998 when she defeated four top 10 players consecutively in the Lipton Championships. In the same year she defeated Martina Hingis the reigning champion of that time. In 1998 Anna Kournikova became the first Russian to be seeded at the U.S Open since 1976. Her only career Grand Slam came in the year 1999, when she paired up with Martina Hingis in the Australian Open. After that her career has been keeping a low profile.
By defeating Steffi Graff in the quarterfinals of Eastbourne Championship she entered into the list of select players who have defeated her.
Anna Kournikova has a variety of interests like reading, listening to music, swimming, and watching T.V. Her other interests include playing ice-hockey and coaching young tennis players.
